Washington's crossing of the Delaware River, which occurred on December 25, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, was the first move in a surprise attack organized by George Washington against the Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey.

Washington's army then crossed the river a third time at the end of the year, under conditions made more difficult by the uncertain thickness of the ice on the river. There they attacked and defeated Hessian troops quartered in and around the village. This surprise attack and victory set the stage for Washington's subsequent victories at the Second Battle of Trenton and Princeton.

George Washington and his troops are melodramatically depicted in Emanuel Leutze’s famous “Washington Crossing the Delaware.” Born in Germany, Leutze (1816 – 1868) used the Rhine River as his model for the Delaware River in this famous painting, one of his well regarded American historical scenes.

The original painting, a huge 12 feet high and 21 feet long, was damaged in a fire, restored, and then destroyed during World War II was replaced by a smaller version which remains an enduring symbol of freedom and patriotism.

There are many copies of the painting, one of which is in the West Wing reception area of the White House. Today this beautiful canvas painting has been carefully recreated detail-by-detail, color-by-color to near perfection by our contract artist. This artwork is hand painted on canvas.
